Basic Mediation Training, Nagarjun Municipality, Kathmandu

Eight days Basic Training on Mediation was organized in Nagarjun Municipality of Kathmandu district from January 25 to February 1, 2019. With the technical assistance of PPR the training was organized by Nagarjun Municipality which was participated by 28 individuals (F-17 and M-11) of different backgrounds. Mr. Satish Sharma, the lead trainer along with the trainers Mr. Bhojraj Acharya, Ms. Bishnumaya Bhushal and Mr. Ishwori Bhattarai facilitated the training sessions. Former chief judges Mr. Keshari Raj Pandit and Mr. Surendra Bir Singh Basnyat, honorable judge Tek Narayan Kunwar of Patan High Court, Mr. Matrika Niroula, member of Mediation Council also facilitated few sessions in the training.

In the 48 hours training, topics on traditional dispute resolution methods and its advantages, various method of dispute resolution, importance and need of Mediation, international practices of mediation was discussed. Importance of communication skills during mediation was also discussed in the training. The training comprised of topics on role, responsibility and quality of a mediator, basic rules of negotiation, national laws relating to mediation, different step (1-7) in Mediation. Each theoretical topic was followed by role play with the help of which the participants get the opportunity to practice the knowledge. The training also comprised of topics on basic elements of mediation, psychological aspects in mediation, process after mediation, ZOPA, BATNA, WATNA, Dirty Tricks, facilitation skills each followed by role play. The participants also practiced skills to use Appreciative Inquiry and art of questioning.
