Title: Lead Researcher


ABOUT PPR

Forum for Protection of People's Rights (PPR) is a non-governmental, not for profit organization established in 2003 to advocate and work in the area of human rights, access to justice and peace building. PPR Nepal works for advocacy, protection and promotion of human rights, access to justice and peace building through lobbying, campaigning, capacity building and research activities. Within the last few years working in different districts across Nepal, PPR contributed to combating Human Trafficking. We have provided legal services/aid to survivors of human trafficking and undertake research on trends of human trafficking especially organ trafficking. THE ASSIGNMENT

There is growing evidence that traffickers are increasingly using various means of exploiting victims/survivors for different types of trafficking such as illegal trade of kidney, fake or sham marriages (individual and/or through a marriage bureau), abroad studies, labor exploitation etc. To better combat these forms of exploitation, it is necessary to understand the real and current scenarios as well as the emerging trends and dimensions of human trafficking in Nepal. This research will focus specifically on identifying risks of being trafficked into entertainment sector, risk of an entertainment sector worker being trafficked to other forms of human trafficking, identify available services and mechanisms for delivery of the services to trafficking survivors and recommend reforms to service delivery, laws, policies, and regulations required to improve the identification, investigation and prosecution of human trafficking cases in the entertainment sector. A Lead Researcher will lead research team in the development, analysis and completion of the research performing the following core duties:Produce high quality research related to new and emerging trends of human trafficking in entertainment sector in Nepal which will include:

  •  Producing a detailed research plan which includes a methodology, all necessary tools for data collection, and data analysis, description of roles and responsibilities, and a detailed work plan
  • Developing monitoring tools to monitor human trafficking especially in entertainment sector
  • Provide quality control, guide, supervise and coordinate the work of Research assistant assigned to the project

IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE

Academic qualifications

  • Masters’ (or equivalent) degree in law, social sciences, or related field is required


Work experience

  • Minimum of 10 years’ professional experience, of which at least 5 years are in the development field (preferably in law and development)
  • Proven experience in conducting applied research projects, preferably using a mix of mutually reinforcing qualitative and quantitative research techniques
  • Demonstrated experience supervising research projects, including leading teams, while under time constraints and strict deadlines
  • Proven expertise in quality report drafting is essential


Languages

  •     Excellent drafting, writing and research skills in English are required.


Technical competencies

  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Ability to design and conduct interviews, focus group discussions, and other research technique
  • Good understanding of current thinking and practice in planning, monitoring, evaluation, and learning (PMEL)

Behavioral competencies

  • Demonstrated ability to work proactively and independently, as well as in a small team, and doing so in a well-organized manner and exercising sound judgment
  • Proven ability to interact in a timely, constructive and professional manner with colleagues, including government representatives, and civil society representatives


TEAM COMPOSITION

The Research Team should have a Lead Researcher, 2 Research Associates and a Data Tabulation Analyst. Research associates and data tabulation analyst should have at least Bachelor degree in Law, Development or Social Science with at least 3 years of relevant experience in assessment or research projects. The lead researcher will be responsible for the team composition.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

This is a short-term consultancy, of 3 months. Payments will be made in installments, following submission and approval by PPR of a series of deliverables to be specified in the Contractor’s terms of reference (available on request).
